Canon Ian Gibson worked in senior management in the drinks trade for many years, and then for an international management training consultancy, specialising in team working, project and change-management. In his spare time, he ran his local church’s youth groups, and this experience set him on the road to explore a vocation to the Priesthood. He was ordained as a Non-Stipendiary Minister, but then worked full-time in the Church as Incumbent of a pair of rural parishes in East Sussex.
Canon Gibson subsequently returned to secular employment, but retained responsibility for the parishes as a house for duty NSM. He also served as Rural Dean and acting Archdeacon of Lewes and Hastings during this period, before Bishop John invited him to become his full-time chaplain.
Recently appointed Episcopal Vicar, Canon Gibson was delighted to then become Canon Treasurer at the cathedral. He shall also be continuing his voluntary roles as chaplain to St John’s Ambulance and as a team member at Aldingbourne, Eastergate and Barnham.
Canon Gibson has been happily married to Terry (she hates being called Teresa!) for 39 years. They have three fine sons - Philip, Richard and Tim. All three are married, and live in various parts of the UK. They also have three grandchildren – Eleanor. Henry and Thomas.
