Five International Artists compete for Prestigious Art Commission at Chichester Cathedral: Exhibition of Proposals 17 November to 14 December 2009 in the Cathedral's North Transept
UPDATE 17/12/09: The exhibition of shortlisted proposals is now closed. Members of the general public and the Cathedral community have been invited to offer feedback and hundreds have done so. These responses will be collated for the second meeting of the Selection Panel, which will take place in March 2010. The Panel will consider the artist's proposals carefully, and taking into account the feedback received, formulate a recommendation to Chapter. There is a spectrum of possible recommendations, such as:
- approval of one proposal in its current form - that none of the proposals fulfil the brief, and Chapter should not proceed - that one artist should be invited to develop their proposal in dialogue with the Cathedral
The chairman of the Panel, Dr Tim Llewellyn, former Director of the Henry Moore Foundation, will meet with Chapter to communicate the recommendation and the reasons for it. Chapter will then decide on the way forward.
Chichester Cathedral is delighted to announce plans to commission a major new artwork to go at the front of the nave. Five internationally famous artists have been invited to compete for this commission: Dorothy Cross, Antony Gormley, Ana Maria Pacheco, Jaume Plensa and Mark Wallinger. The Cathedral will exhibit their proposals in its North Transept from 17 November to 14 December.
