SCHOOLS, WORKSHOPS, RESOURCES & GUIDED TOURS

Preschool

For very young children, perhaps pre-school age, we can offer specially designed visits, perhaps investigating light and dark or bright and shiny themes!

We welcome the chance to work with teachers to create a visit which works for you and your group, and we are used to small children making a noise!

Please feel free to come and share ideas - we will do our very best to make it work.

Discuss your particular group's requirements with the Education Department
on 01243 812497.

Key Stage 1

Many of the workshops for KS2 can be adapted very successfully for KS1 children - please see below for more detail.

KS1 Workshops

POEMS, PRAYERS & PROMISES
Inspired through handling sessions and/or time spent in the Cathedral, we offer KS1 Specially themed creative workshops.  Any of the following subjects can be chosen.

  • Rescuers and Evangelists - The Cathedral's own Bishop Bell and/or St Wilfrid linked to other leaders such as Moses and St Paul
  • Belonging and Baptism - joining the Christian family
  • Church Festivals - this could be Easter, Advent or Christmas
  • Remembrance - thinking of special people as well as those who have died (in war?)

BRASS RUBBING
Allows each pupil the chance to complete at least one rubbing. There are many brasses to choose from, including saints, animals, knights and noble ladies.

STAINED GLASS
Enables each pupil to visit and then have a go at creating a stained glass window inspired by one of the Cathedral's windows.

UGLY MUGS
Inspired by the Cathedral's gargoyles and corbels, this is a practical session involving the children creating a small clay gargoyle; this self-dries and can be painted in school later should you wish.

TREASURES IN THE TREASURY
Why not find out if your parish has treasures on display in the Cathedral Treasury and come and see them?   There will be a chance to ask questions and the opportunity to sketch something rare close-to.

THE LIFE AND MIRACLES OF ST. RICHARD
Each child is given a part and a costume and the life and miracles of St. Richard are re-enacted in a very lively way through mime. The session culminates in a costumed pilgrimage to the Shrine of St. Richard in the Cathedral, where each pupil will be given a copy of the Prayer of St. Richard.

We also offer KS1 TRIPLES for 5-6 year olds.
These are supported visits to the Cathedral focusing on any three parts/features of the Cathedral and they have been designed especially for younger children.  Lasting approximately 30-40 minutes, one of our specially trained KS1 team will inspire and enthuse the children on topics you, the teacher, have chosen!  The children will have a short talk (about 5 minuutes) on each of the three topics and then sketch and describe them to take back to school.  Popular choices are the font, altar, shrine, spire, Chagall window - but you can choose.  Please bring your own paper and pencils for this session.

Key Stage 2

We offer workshops on many areas of the curriculum including drama, history, R.E., art and technology.  All lend themselves to cross-curricular activities.  All involve practical activities and participation by the pupils.

DRAMA WORKSHOPS

PILGRIMS & PILGRIMAGE
This lively workshop involves role-play: each child will be given an identity in advance and a costume on the day. The children are then given the chance to interview two or three 'real' adult pilgrims in the Cathedral (these might include the King, a nun, friar or a palmer) who will lead them on a costumed pilgrimage to the Shrine where they can offer their prayers and gifts. Each child will receive a copy of the Prayer of St. Richard.
