In 2008, Chichester celebrated the 50th anniversary of the death of George Bell, Bishop 1929-58, and before that Dean of Canterbury from 1924.

Bishop Bell was distinguished in the Church in many areas, especially for his far-sighted interest in international Christian Unity, his courageous stand for Christian principles in the Second World War, his patronage of the arts, and his passionate vision of the Church and its place in a just society in the Dioceses where he worked.

This 5-week study course on George Bell's life and work is designed for use by interested groups, in parishes, deaneries, or ecumenical settings, and includes a range of material for general interest or more detailed study (select what you like).

Each session includes History - Bell's work set in historical context, Evidence - Bell's own words from his addresses and writing, and Reflection - an opportunity to think about his legacy and a Christian response today.

It can be used as a Lent course, or for study at any time and at many levels.

Sessions are planned as follows:
- 1 Bell's own life: Bell bravely spoke out for truth and justice in difficult times: how do we see our own Christian responsibility for speaking out?
- 2 Bell the Ecumenist: Bell saw worldwide Christian unity as essential to Christ's peace: how do we work for unity today?
- 3 Bell and War: Bell worked for friendship and justice in war, even between enemies: how do we now see justice in times of conflict? can there be a Just War?
- 4 Bell and the Arts: Bell worked for a partnership between artists, the Church, and the community; how do we encourage all talents in church and community today?
- 5 Bell in the Diocese: Bell was an inspiring pastor who worked for the good of the whole of society: what place should churches have in making a fair society today?

We hope the course will help people to understand George Bell and his legacy, and provide an interesting chance to study issues of history and present concern, and to enjoy sharing the experience.

From here you can also explore links with other websites, for examples of Bell's patronage of the arts.
