Why are there Friends?

Founded in 1939, the Friends organisation was established to work alongside the Dean & Chapter in their task of maintaining the Cathedral as a centre of worship, and to help develop the Cathedral's outreach and mission in the local community and beyond.

Since its foundation, the Friends have contributed well over £1 million which has been spent on projects great and small, enabling the Cathedral to be properly maintained for the worship of God in the most beautiful of surroundings.

And being a Friend provides many opportunities for practical Christianity while at the same time being part of a caring and outgoing group of people who provide fellowship and a friendly welcome to all.  As well as there being a series of social events throughout the year for members, many who live locally play an active role in other aspects of Cathedral life - becoming doorkeepers, guides and/or stewards, to name but a few - and we are always happy to welcome new volunteers.
