A Memorable Day as Chichester Welcomes the Archbishop of Canterbury

Thousands gathered today (Tuesday March 19) to welcome the Archbishop of Canterbury to Chichester.  The Most Revd Justin Welby was visiting the Cathedral City which was the last stop of his journey in Prayer before he is enthroned at Canterbury Cathedral on Thursday 21 March.

At 11.30am the Archbishop walked through the crowds to Market Cross, in the centre of Chichester, where he stopped to speak to school children.  He then processed slowly along West Street into the Cathedral, greeting those who had come hoping to meet him.

Roger Coombes, the Archdeacon of Horsham, said he was very encouraged by the sheer number of people who had turned out to witness the historic occasion for Chichester and the Diocese.  He said: "So many people have come today to welcome their new Archbishop.  I am very encouraged by this sign of hope.  It sends a very strong message that church has a real place in our hearts and lives."

Many onlookers commented on how relaxed, friendly and easy going the Archbishop was.  Hundreds of people crammed into the cathedral to see him and pray with him as he moved around the many prayer stations specially set up for the occasion.  These included prayer trees, a labyrinth, a world map and special activities for children.  The Archbishop said prayers on the hour throughout the afternoon, and ended an amazing, imaginative and prayer filled day by attending Evensong, which was attended by over 600 people.

The Dean, Nicholas Frayling, said it was "A fascinating and very moving day."
