Artwork which will depict the Chichester district at West Sussex events celebrating the London 2012 Olympics has been unveiled.

It is a colourful image of Chichester Cathedral, designed by Marc Talmage, a member of Starburst Arts based at the Wrenford Centre, Chichester, a day centre for adults with learning difficulties.

The design was revealed at the district council's Get Active festival at Oaklands Park.  A selection of the other artworks were also displayed.

The West Sussex Arts Partnership and West Sussex Ahead of the Game delivered mysterious cultural Olympiad  'eggs' to all West Sussex's districts and boroughs as part of the events to involve local people in the planning for London 2012.

Each 'hatched' egg will be part of the Olympic and Paralympic celebrations in West Sussex in 2012.  Each local character or depiction will have a distinctive identity, reflecting the district or borough.

Cllr Nick Thomas, council portfolio holder for culture and sport said: "In the Chichester district, we wanted the egg to reflect the great range of communities, heritage and arts activities.  The Council decided that its egg should reflect the Olympic ideal of everyone being involved in celebrating creativity and achievement."

Adults with learning disabilities were invited to develop the ideas to inspire the Chichester district artwork.  The theme of celebrations was chosen as the starting point.

Users of the Wrenford Centre, a West Sussex County Council day centre, and the Apuldram Centre, worked together to create a number of paintings and other artworks.  The art sessions were led by Sally Christopher of Starburst Arts.

Local artist David Pratt of Unity Arts Trust, working in Chichester, made the chosen design into a piece of artwork.

Subject to further funding being available the artwork will grow and evolve into a piece of carnival art to be shown at events in 2012.
