Cathedral Employee Performs to Hundreds at Lunchtime Concert...

The Cathedral runs a Tuesday lunchtime concert series each term, and this February Louise Martin, the Cathedral's Liturgy and Music Assistant, performed along with her saxophone quartet, the Auster Quartet.  The local quartet have been playing together since June 2010.  The other members of the quartet are Ali Helsby, Antonia Kent and Spencer Bundy.  The Auster Quartet have performed in concerts around the Sussex and Hampshire area, and have also played at weddings, but to date the Cathedral Lunchtime Concert has been their largest audience, numbering around 500.  Louise said: 'We thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to perform in such a large venue and the audience seemed to appreciate the sound of the 4 saxophones (soprano, alto, tenor and bass).  However there were different interpretations by the audience of how the sound came across in the large space, with some likening it to strings at one point, and others an organ - although the Cathedral organists might have something to say about that!'

The lunchtime concert series run three times a year in each term, and there are usually 10 concerts per series.  The concerts have grown in popularity even further over the last few years, with regular audience numbers increasing to around 500.  They are an excellent opportunity to hear classical music performed to a high standard - free of charge.  Each series usually provides a mixture of instrumentation, including two solo pianists and two solo organists, usually one school age ensemble or an orchestra, and a mixture of small ensembles and instrumental soloists with piano.  The concerts are free to attend with a retiring collection at the end.  Coffee is provided and the audience can bring their lunch to eat during the concert.

The concerts run from 1.10pm - 2pm on Tuesdays during term time.  To check the current series details, or to keep a check on the dates for the next series please click here.
