The Cathedral goes green with the launch of the 'Eco Church'...

On Sunday 24th September, during the 11am Sung Eucharist, the Reverend Dr Mark Betson, Rural and Environment Officer for the Diocese of Chichester, launched the Cathedral as an 'Eco-Church'.

Eco Church is an award scheme for churches in England and Wales created by A Rocha UK (arocha.org.uk), a Christian charity working for the protection and restoration of the natural world. It helps churches who want to demonstrate that the gospel is good news for God’s earth, and seek guidance on how they can make a positive impact.  The vision is for churches of all denominations to care for creation as an integral part of loving their neighbours and following God faithfully.

The scheme provides an online survey and supporting resources that will help the Cathedral to express care for God’s world through its worship and teaching, to look after its buildings and to engage with the local community and its congregation.  The Cathedral's actions are assessed with the hope that this will lead to a prestigious ‘Eco Church Award’.  Following registration to the award scheme in August 2017, the Cathedral team has been gathering information about its environmental activity in Worship and Teaching, Buildings, Land, Lifestyle and Community Engagement. A final submission was made this week and the Dean and Chapter look forward to seeing how the Cathedral measures up and where improvements can be made.  An ambition has been set for Chichester Cathedral to achieve the ‘Eco Church Bronze Award’ by April 2018.
