Chapter Statement

A STATEMENT FROM THE DEAN AND CHAPTER AND THE BISHOP OF CHICHESTER 

Misreporting in the national media of a comment by the Bishop, following a lecture to Forward in Faith, has led to considerable embarrassment and distress, not least to the Bishop himself, and to evident misunderstanding.

These reports have gained prominence on account of recent overtures from the Vatican - as yet unspecified - to members of the Church of England.

A number of anxious church-people have contacted the Dean & Chapter about these developments and have sought clarification as to the position of the Cathedral.

Accordingly the Dean & Chapter have issued the following statement, with which the Bishop has asked to be fully associated:

Chichester Cathedral is the mother church of the Diocese of Chichester and will remain a spiritual home for all members of the Church of England, where worship is offered in accordance with the traditions of that Church.  The Cathedral, is and will continue to be, a place where every person is welcomed, whatever their religious affiliation.
