Holocaust Memorial Day, on Wednesday 27th January 2016, was marked at Chichester Cathedral through an extremely moving performance of the staged oratorio Last Train to Tomorrow.  Composed by the world famous Carl Davis, Last Train to Tomorrow is a tribute to the late Sir Nicholas Winton's heroic personal decision to rescue hundreds of Jewish children from Nazi Europe and send them to Britain before the start of World War Two.

The evening included the full performance of Last Train to Tomorrow by the University of Chichester Chamber Orchestra and Symphonic Choir conducted on the night by Carl Davis himself.  Carl Davis CBE is an American-born conductor and composer who has made his home in the United Kingdom since 1961.  Davis is a conductor with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and also regularly conducts the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.  He has written music for more than 100 television programmes, but is best known for creating music to accompany silent films.

The performance of Last Train to Tomorrow was preceded by a very poignant tribute to Sir Nicholas Winton, from Lady Grenfell-Baines and Helenka De Coutere, who owe their lives to this remarkable man.  Short scenes from their journey were re-enacted through the oratorio by the talented children and actors from Chichester Youth Theatre.

Over 500 people came to enjoy this very special free event and gave generously to a retiring collection in support of the international charity Save the Children.
