Chichester Cathedral to Participate in Sussex Historic Churches 'Ride & Stride' Event

On Saturday 12th September, Chichester Cathedral will open its doors to participants of the annual ‘Ride & Stride’ event organised by the Sussex Historic Churches Trust. The annual event is a sponsored course around the churches in Sussex and money raised will assist in the repair and maintenance of Sussex’s historic churches, allowing their beauty to be appreciated by future generations.

The ‘Ride & Stride’ event is fairly unique in nature as there is no fixed route thus it encourages people to see the wonderful churches and chapels in the county, including Chichester Cathedral, and to explore parts of Sussex that they may not normally see. ‘Ride & Stride’ is an event that all ages can enjoy - families are welcome to take part as well as individuals. For those of a competitive nature, there are trophies awarded for the number of churches visited. Any rider or walker can go where they choose, and may start and finish at any church, visiting as many or as few as they like within the county. Other than by bicycle, the only accepted alternative form of transport is on foot, wheelchair or horse.

The money raised from the Ride & Stride event will be shared equally between the Trust and the church or chapel nominated by each participant. In Sussex over 600 buildings will be taking part with some of them providing refreshments. For more information about the participating churches, please visit www.sussexhistoricchurchestrust.org.uk

Participants visiting Chichester Cathedral between 1:00pm and 4:00pm on the day of the event will have an exciting opportunity to ‘See Behind the Scenes’ as the Cathedral allows access to parts of the Cathedral normally closed to the public. The Cathedral will be opening up three areas as part of Heritage Open Day including; the Song School, the Cathedral Library and the Bishop’s Chapel. Visitors will also be able to see the Cathedral’s wonderful collection of 20th-century paintings, sculptures and glass including a window by Marc Chagall, a tapestry by John Piper and a painting by Graham Sutherland.
