New Communar Appointed at Chichester Cathedral

A new Communar (or Chief Administrator) has been appointed at Chichester Cathedral.  The current Communar, Commodore David Mowlam RN, will be retiring in February 2011, and the he will be succeeded by Colonel Andrew Maynard RM.

Andrew Maynard will be joining the Cathedral in late January, when he complete a distinguished 24 year career in the Royal Marines.  His most recent post has been a Staff Appointment in the Ministry of Defence, prior to which he commanded the Commando Logistics Regiment on operations in Afghanistan, for which he received a Queen's Commendation.  Andrew lives in Chichester with his wife Lisa, they have 3 children and are active members of their local church, St Paul's.

The Very Revd Nicholas Frayling, Dean of Chichester, says of the appointment: 'We are delighted that Andrew Maynard has been appointed as Communar, from an extremely strong field of candidates, and greatly look forward to working with him for the benefit of the Cathedral and community in Chichester.'

There were 102 applicants for the post of Communar.  The current Communar, Commodore David Mowlam retires after 10 years in this demanding post, the Dean explains: 'The last ten years have seen unprecedented changes in the way Cathedrals are governed.  David has guided the Cathedral's affairs with great efficiency, and the fact that Chichester Cathedral manages to balance its budget (more or less!) without charging visitors for admission is at least in part due to David's eagle eye, attention to detail and administrative know-how.  He and his wife Kay will be much missed in the Cathedral Close.'

The Communar is the senior lay administrator on the Cathedral staff.  The name comes from the latin 'Communarius' meaning 'keeper of the Common Fund' and until 1973 the post was held by a clergyman.  The Communar, although a member of the Cathedral Chapter, is also responsible to Chapter for financial planning; personnel matters including acting as line manager for all the lay staff; managing the property and maintenance of the Cathedral Close; coordinating the restoration of the Cathedral building and the general administration of Cathedral business.
