'Spiritual Beings' An Exhibition by Fine Art Students from the University of Chichester

Detail from the Installation by University of Chichester Fine Art Students
Installation Detail

Tuesday 24th May to 12.30pm on Sunday 29th May 2016

In the Cathedral's North Transept

Open daily with free entry

This installation is a collaboration between four second year students in Fine Art at the University of Chichester.  It is inspired by the Cathedral both as a structure and as a place.  Their aim for the installation is to use the North Transept to engage with visitors to the Cathedral both visually and physically, playing in particular upon the quality of light in this space.

The installation is made from recycled glass bottles of various common types (wine, beer, water etc).  'Slumping' the bottles (melting them in the kiln, has produced interestingly warped glass forms in various states from upright to leaning, collapsing to puddled.  Braided ribbon is used to outline and enhance the forms of the glass and the larger swirl shape of the arrangement as a whole.  Together the bottles and ribbons create a pathway, which viewers can walk through, reflecting ideas about the way people go on their own journey through life.
