Hundreds attend a Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Sir John 'Sandy' Forster Woodward GBE, KCB

Admiral Sir John Woodward, known as 'Sandy', was remembered in a service of thanksgiving on Thursday 14th November at 2.30pm in Chichester Cathedral.

In 1982 as Commander of the Royal Navy he led the most successful British naval expedition since the second world war which retook the Falkland Islands after the Argentinian Invasion. He retired from the navy in 1989 and moved to Bosham, near Chichester to spend more time on his interests of sailing and philately. He died on 4th August at the age of 81.

Over 800 people attended the service including reprentatives of the Royal Family. Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh were represented by Admiral Sir George Zamellas KCB, DSC, ADC, DL, The First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff. His Royal Highness the Duke of York was represented by Vice Admiral Rory McLean CB, OBE and His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent was represented by Commodore Andrew Jameson ADC, Royal Navy.

The Dean opened by saying what an honour it was for Chichester Cathedral to hold the service. The Admiral's Orders and Decorations were borne in procession to the Arundel Screen, accompanied by a Royal Navy Colour Party. Tributes were given by Captain John Jacobsen, Royal Navy and The Revered David Cooper, Chaplain to the 2nd Battalion, the Parachute Regiment in 1982. Chichester Cathedral Choir sang Rutter's 'The Lord bless you and keep you' and Parry's 'My soul, there is a country'.
