Dr Edward Dowler will be installed as Archdeacon of Hastings at Chichester Cathedral, on Tuesday 20th September 2016,during evensong at 3.30pm.

The new archdeacon, who was until recently Vicar of St John and St Luke, Clay Hill in the Diocese of London, was officially collated and licensed in Rye Parish Church on Sunday 18th September.  The Chichester Cathedral Choir marked the occasion by singing at the service in Rye.

The Bishop of Chichester, Dr Martin Warner, welcomed Dr Dowler, who serves as one of four archdeacons across the Diocese of Chichester.  Each of the four archdeacons has a stall in the Cathedral which represents their ministry to the whole diocese.

Edward studied English at Oxford and then trained for ordination at Westcott House, Cambridge.  He was ordained deacon in 1994 in the Diocese of London.  In 2001, Edward joined the staff of St Stephen's House, a theological college in Oxford, as Director of Pastoral Theology, and later became the College Vice-Principal.  He returned to parochial ministry in 2001 when he became the Vicar of St John and St Luke in Clay Hill.

Edward is married to Anna Tims, a journalist for the Guardian.  They have two children: Eleanor (13) and Gregory (11).  He enjoys reading, cooking and learning to play the piano.  He is a regular contributor of articles and book reviews to the Church Times and he also reviews books for the journal Political Theology.

Archdeacons work closely with the Bishop of Chichester, his suffragan bishops and the wider senior team.  They are particularly important to the local parishes and deaneries in which they serve in supporting local clergy and laity.
