'Walter & Lenny' A New Play at Chichester Festival Theatre This Autumn

Leonard Bernstein & Dean Walter Hussey
Leonard Bernstein & Dean Walter Hussey

From 11th - 14th November 2015 the Minerva Theatre at Chichester Festival Theatre will host another world premiere with 'Walter & Lenny.'  This play marks the 50th anniversary of the first performance of Leonard Bernstein and Chichester Cathedral Dean Walter Hussey's 'Chichester Psalms' in the Cathedral.

This new play devised by Peter McEnery and directed by Julia St John is a delightful insight into a chance friendship, and explores a treasured piece of Chichester history.  In 1963, Walter Hussey, Dean of Chichester, wrote to world famous composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein, asking him to compose a piece of choral music for their upcoming Three Choirs Festival.  Bernstein accepted.  An extraordinary friendship arose from their correspondence, and in 1965 the 'Chichester Psalms' received their (almost) world premiere in the Cathedral.

Walter Hussey was Dean of Chichester from 1955 until his retirement in 1977.  He was a great patron of the arts, commissioning a number of musical commissions and visual art for the church as well as amassing his own collection.  During his time as Dean of Chichester Cathedral he commissioned artists such as Graham Sutherland, John Piper and Marc Chagall to produce artworks which can be seen in the Cathedral today.

Hussey's own collection of art was bequeathed to the City of Chichester and is now housed in Pallant House Gallery.  Pallant House Gallery is an art gallery in Chichester which houses one of the best collections of 20th century British art in the world.  The Gallery's collection is founded on the works left to the city by Walter Hussey in 1977, on his retirement from the position of Dean of Chichester Cathedral.  The collection included works by Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore,  John Piper, Ceri Richards and Graham Sutherland.
