6.00pm Advent Procession - Turning darkness into light...
One of the most evocative services of the year, the Advent Procession marks the beginning of the season of preparation for Christmas.
From the depth of a darkened, silent Cathedral a single voice sings the ancient hymn ' Creator of the stars of night' introducing a service in which words and music (sung by the Cathedral Choir) dramatically re-state the Advent hope found in the Scriptures that Christ will come as the Light of the nations. During the service the choir and the clergy process through the Cathedral as candles from the congregation illuminate the darkened building. The congregation will also sing favourite and compelling Advent hymns proclaiming the hope Christ brings to a world beset by suffering and darkness. The Cathedral Choir will be singing beautiful music by Byrd, Goldschmidt and Elgar. All are welcome (no tickets are necessary).
