Enlightenment by Amy Cushing - a spectacular new glass installation, never seen before and created especially for Chichester Cathedral - will be suspended over the Cathedral's font from Wednesday 15th November 2017 until Wednesdasy 28th February 2018.

Enlightenment is a beautiful delicate column of floating glass that will rise up from the font towards the triforium.  It is a 3 metre column of approximately 500 pieces of handmade glass elements that are iridescent and include fine metallic copper flakes, echoing the copper within the font.  The diffused sections will create a delicate palate of colour which will reflect and contrast the bapistry.  Amy is seeking to create an ethereal motion to the sculpture, as if rising out of the font towards the heavens.

The title Enlightenment draws together the context and purpose of the font, together with the importance of the Christmas period during which it will be displayed.

Amy Cushing graduated from Chelsea College of Art & Design, specialising in Ceramics and Glass for her BA in Public Art.  Since then she has become one of London's most creative designers with her unparalleled understanding of fused glass combined with her intuitive sense of colour.  Amy's training was in large scale public art, specialising in ceramics and glass, and this now informs her installations and artworks.  The beauty of her glass sculptures is in the detail, techniques achieved over a period of years through experimenting with kilns to achieve the desired effects and colours.  Amy is regularly selected to represent British Design both in the UK and overseas and has won many awards, chiefly from the British Council.  Amy has a particular interest in Arts for the Teaching Environment.  Her work is held in many private and corporate collections around the world.

This installation has been facilitated by Jacquiline Creswell who is a Curator and Visual Arts Advisor.
