Living with Pain - A seminar for all who live with chronic pain, care for those who do or who would like to know more...

Living with Chronic Pain

Saturday 21st May 2016

9.30am - 12.30pm in Vicars' Hall

The event is free and all are welcome.

Pain UK estimates that some 14 million people in the UK live with pain.  This is a huge number, often unrecognised by the medical profession and particularly in wider society.  Chronic pain is long-term pain that lasts longer than 12 weeks.

How can people living with chronic pain be helped?  What therapies, treatments and management practices are available?  How much does the attitude of the individual affect their experience, and how can they respond positively to the challenges?  Does 'healing' work?  Are there any theological implications to the meaning of pain?  Does a contemplation of Christ's 'passion' have anything to say to those who suffer in this way?

Speakers:

Anthony Chuter, chairs the Patient Liaison Committee at the British Pain Society and is Chair of the charity Pain UK.  He has lived with chronic pain for over 20 years.  He has been active in the Expert Patient programme and received an Honorary Fellowship for his work with the Royal College of General Practice.

Dr Cathy Price is a Consultant at the University Hospital in Southampton specialising in Pain Medicine.  She set up the first community-based pain management programme in the UK and transformed the pain team into a multi-disciplinary pain clinic, which has developed innovative ways of helping patients with complex pain problems.

The Revd Canon Peter Wells is the Lead Chaplain at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust.  He provides supervision for a number of healthcare staff and chaplains as well as spiritual direction.  He is an Anglican priest and honorary canon at Chichester Cathedral.  Peter has worked in the area of end of life and palliative care across the age span.

All are welcome and the event is free.  Please register your name with Richard Ashby on 01243 372234 (please leave a message if there is no answer) or email: richardashby45@btinternet.com.
