The Cathedral Eucharist

Eucharistic elements
Bread and wine of the Eucharist

Whether you are a visitor or a regular worshipper at the cathedral or another church, you are very welcome to the Sung Eucharist which takes place every Sunday at 11am.

The Eucharist is at the heart of the worshipping life of the Cathedral and brings together the Cathedral community with people who may be visiting. It is a feast of worship at its most memorable, combining inspiring liturgy, insightful preaching and glorious music sung by the Cathedral Choir in term time, or visiting choirs at other times. We work hard to make the service as approachable as possible.

The Cathedral Eucharist is a drama in four acts using a variety of spiritual expressions: prayer and praise, singing and silence, movement and music, listening and speaking, colour and contemplation.

Act 1 is The Preparation when we open our hearts and minds to the presence of God through singing, by confessing our failures to love God and one another and by asking for the Holy Spirit to make God real to us.

Act 2 is The Liturgy of the Word when we listen to the story of God’s love for the world in readings from the Bible, the Creed and the sermon. Having heard of God’s care for all creation we bring the needs of the world before him in prayer.

Act 3 is The Liturgy of the Sacrament when we remember the words and actions of Jesus at the Last Supper. Bread and wine is set on the altar and thanksgiving is offered to God as we celebrate all his blessings to us. This thanksgiving prayer activates the past – the Lord’s death and resurrection are made present again and we are renewed by the Lord’s presence in our midst. All are invited to meet with the Risen Christ by receiving bread and wine or by receiving a blessing.

Act 4 is The Dismissal when, having been empowered by the Risen Christ, we are commissioned to go out and share with others the love we have received from our Lord.

If you would like to prepare in advance for the coming Sunday’s service, the Order of Service appears on the link below on the previous Friday.
