Chapter

The Chapter are the body that determine the policy for administering the Cathedral. It is made up of both Clergy and Lay staff who work in unison to undertake the successful running of the Cathedral.

The derivation of the name ‘Chapter’ comes from the gathering together of monks or canons for the reading of a chapter of the Bible or a heading of the order's rule.

The Dean of Chichester has overall responsibility for co-ordinating and developing the life of the Cathedral, in order to further its mission and ministry.  As a member of the Bishop of Chichester's Senior Staff, Bishop's Council and the Diocesan Synod he represents the Cathedral in the Diocese and the county of Sussex.

The Precentor

The Reverend Canon Tim Schofield
The Precentor of the Cathedral is the Canon with special responsibility for the Liturgy and Music Department. He works closely with the Organist and Master of the Choristers, the Priest Vicar and the Liturgy and Music Administrator to oversee the arrangement and content of worship in the Cathedral.

Simon joined the Chapter in 2011 and has been associated with Chichester Cathedral since 2000. Simon has been a long standing member of the PCC in Oving and has been a member of the Chichester Deanery synod since 2004.

Simon was ordained in Chichester Cathedral in 1981, having qualified as a barrister before undertaking ordination training at Westcott House in Cambridge.
