St Mary's Hospital is a Christian foundation which provides a home for up to 36 residents in the medieval hospital and other buildings nearby.

The residents are encouraged to live independent lives, and are cared for and supported by the staff consisting of the Warden Team, Bailiff and Custos (Chaplain).  Residents are also encouraged to attend morning prayers in chapel during the week

How to Apply

The St Mary's Hospital Trustees welcome applications for admission to the almshouses which will be considered at least twice a year. To be eligible for residency applicants must:

  • Be elderly and of limited financial means.
  • Be in sufficiently good health to cook and housekeep for themselves.
  • Be of good character.
  • Have resided for the five years preceding their application in an ecclesiastical parish in the Diocese of Chichester, any part of which is within 15 miles of the Cathedral Church of Chichester.
  • Be in sympathy with the religion of the Church of England, preferably a communicant member.

Appointments to view the communal areas of the complex and any apartments, when available, are encouraged before making an application and can be arranged by contacting the Warden - tel 01243 783377.
