Community Partners and Events

We believe Chichester Cathedral should be an accessible place for everyone to experience.

We work in partnership with other local organisations to provide opportunities that are meaningful and relevant to local people including older adults, families and young people.

Our latest community event was Live Better Together in September 2017. Chichester Cathedral welcomed people of all faiths, cultures and ages to ‘Live Better Together’ to mark International Day of Peace which is observed around the world each year on 21st September. Events included a talk by Dr Simon Keyes ‘Creating Sustainable Peace Within Our Communities', an interfaith panel discussion ‘How can we live better together, for the wellbeing of all?’ and ‘Make Art Not War’ workshops. Noted representatives from different local faith communities took part in the interfaith panel including Abbot Ajahn Karuniko of Chithurst Buddhist Monastery and Sheikh Fazle Abbas Datoo, Imam of the Al Mahdi Centre in Fareham.   Participants reflected that “I have been touched by the various discussions from the interfaith representatives and by their passion to establish a better society”; “It was an inspiration to hear from the interfaith panel.  There are many ideas to bring to our homes and into the community and our faith groups.” as well as “I gained more knowledge about trying to see things from the perspective of others and to live more at peace with myself and the world around us.”  Within the Cathedral there was a peace trail candle lighting and prayers with one visitor commenting how the “trail was very thought provoking, using the beauty of the Cathedral and the depth of its spirituality.”  In the afternoon all visitors were encouraged to contribute to a hand printed community banner which is now hanging in the Cathedral as a symbol of hope and peace in our lives and communities. The ‘Live Better Together’ events at Chichester Cathedral were a timely opportunity to think about what peace means in our own lives, local community and the wider world today. We are members of the Chichester Cultural Learning Partnership, a network of six local cultural organisations that share best practice and work together on a variety of projects. Most recently we have developed Dementia friendly learning opportunities, launched through Living Well with Dementia Festivals.

We are also in the process of raising funding for a new post to join our team - a Families and Young People’s Officer - to increase our capacity to engage with these audiences.
