A First for Chichester...

Canons of Honour

History was made in Chichester Cathedral on Sunday 19 June 2011.  Two new Canons of Honour were admitted by Bishop John Hind, one Roman Catholic and one Protestant.  The Cathedral is twinned with the Cathedrals of Chartres in France and Bamberg in Germany, and with the Lutheran Church in Bayreuth.  Canon Dominique Aubert, the Dean of Chartres Cathedral and Bishop Dorothea Greiner, the Regional Bishop of Bayreuth, were installed in Chichester Cathedral.  The Bible readings were given in French and German.

In a powerful sermon, Bishop Greiner spoke of the close links between Chichester and the European churches,  which began with the friendship between Bishop George Bell and Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer more than 70 years ago.  She praised the Church of England for its attempts to hold the different Christian traditions together: 'Keep going, dear Anglican brothers and sistsers.  You are a big role model for us!'

Dean Nicholas Frayling said: 'Bishop John called this occasion unique and historic, and so it was.  We greatly value our special relationship with our partners in the faith in France and Germany and will go on working to deepen trust and understanding between the churches.'

Also at the ceremony on Sunday were Bishop Kieran Conry of Arundel and Brighton and 18 area deans from Bayreuth.
