A Month at Sea in Winter...

Challenger 2
Challenger 2

How do 35 nights, 3500 miles, in mid-winter in the vastness of the North Atlantic Ocean sound to you?

In January 2018 a trustee of the Chichester Cathedral Friends, Howard Castle-Smith, will be a member of the crew on the 72 foot Challenger 2 yacht as she embarks on the gruelling west/east passage across the North Atlantic from Antigua to Portsmouth.

Challenger 2 will leave Antigua on 6th January 2018 and initially head north on a great circle route to try to get away from the prevailing easterly winds and then try to pick up the Westerlies that will speed them back to the UK. If they have kind winds they may well be able to break the journey in the Azores, before pushing on with the final leg back to Falmouth and eventually Portsmouth. With the weather deteriorating the further north they go and the traversing of the continental shelf, where the ocean depth abruptly goes from 4000m to 100m, the sea conditions on that final leg of the journey will present a major challenge.

Howard is relatively new to sailing having never been on a sailing boat before the summer of 2017. Now, having been on three weeks of sailing courses in the Solent to achieve his Day Skipper ticket, he admits to being more than a little daunted by the thought of making the leap from the Solent to the North Atlantic Ocean. Under the watch of a professional skipper and first mate, Howard will be joined by eleven other crew members, all at differing stages of sailing experience, but all looking forward to what will be an amazing experience.

You can follow Howard’s progress on the daily blog, starting on 6th January.
