Chichester Cathedral to Receive Grant from the First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund...

Chichester Cathedral

Chichester Cathedral Restoration & Development Trust are to receive a £140,000 grant from the First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund.  Grants from the fund allow cathedrals to undertake urgent repair work.  The Trust successfully applied to the scheme for funds towards essential repairs to the roof of the North West Tower, under which is found the the Chapel of St Michael, also known as "The Sailors' Chapel."

Grants from the £20 million fund, which was announced by the Chancellor at Budget 2014, provide for urgent repair work to English Cathedrals, including keeping the buildings wind-proof, weather-tight, safe and open to the public, and preventing any further deterioration of the building.

Craig Sergeant, Trust Director, comments that "This is wonderful news, the North West Tower roof is in urgent need of repair to ensure it is watertight and to repair any damage already caused by leaks.  It contains the Chapel of St Michael, known as "The Sailors Chapel", and includes a memorial to those men of Sussex who lost their lives at sea.  We are incredibly grateful for this grant as, together with the matched funding we have already raised, it allows the necessary work to be progressed immediately, enabling us to turn our attention to the challenging task of raising funds for our other restoration and development projects.  An essential, but costly, programme of work requiring many millions of pounds."
