Chichester Observer Interview the Dean as he Retires from the Cathedral

Friday 28th February marked the 70th birthday and official retirement of The Very Reverend Nicholas Frayling as Dean of Chichester Cathedral. Nicholas was interviewed about the highlights in his 12 years at the Cathedral by the Chichester Observer, where he also spoke about his life prior to coming to Sussex.  He became Dean in September 2002, remarking that “It was very different, something of a culture shock… It is a wonderful Cathedral with some lovely people worshipping here.” He said one of the greatest achievements was making sure admission to the Cathedral remained free. “This is the people’s Cathedral, we want everybody to be able to come in. That is really important.”

Integral to his time at the Cathedral has also been his links with other churches in Europe, namely Bamburg, Bayreuth, Chartres and Ravenna, he said, “the link has never been stronger.” However, as the Observer states, it is his faith and acceptance of people in all shapes and forms which has made him a much-loved Dean in the city.
