Dean and Chapter publish new book about Lambert Barnard

Lambert Barnard
Lambert Barnard

A new book entitled ‘Lambert Barnard: Chichester’s Tudor Painter’ has been published by the Dean and Chapter of Chichester Cathedral. Written by Karen Coke, the book provides an insight into the Tudor Paintings held in the Cathedral and what was discovered during their conservation. The publication offers a much-needed account of early Tudor painting in a regional context.
The paintings were created by Lambert Barnard (c.1490-1567/8) for his employer, the Tudor Bishop of Chichester, Robert Sherborn (c.1453-1536). No comparable portraits by an English artist have survived on this scale, they also hold a message of posterity from one of the many English Catholic bishops who were feeling vulnerable and threatened by the seismic changes to the English Church being proposed by Henry VIII. The value of these paintings lies not only in their aesthetic qualities, but in what they can tell us of the partnership between patron and painter living and working at a time when modern Britain was being born.
The book offers significant description about the paintings' importance and can be purchased in the Cathedral Shop situated in the Cloisters or online by clicking here.
