During his lifetime the late Duke served as a member of the Church of England's General Synod/ Church Assembly. He was a committed Christian layman and an attentive Patron of Boxgrove, Lavant and Tangmere Churches. At the announcement of the Duke's death, the Bishop of Chichester said: 'We give thanks for the contribution of this noble and gracious man; we pray for his family and all who grieve for him. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.'
