New Bell Tower Drop In Centre...

Bell Tower at Chichester Cathedral
Bell Tower at Chichester Cathedral

The official launch of this project will take place at 2pm on Thursday 12th February 2015 in Chichester Cathedral's Bell Tower.

A large scale survey carried out in 2013 showed that a large number of young people return to an empty home after school as more and more parents have to work longer hours.  There is often no one at home to chat to or help with homework.  The Churches in the City of Chichester and the University of Chichester have therefore partnered together to establish and provide a daily Drop In Centre for young people.

The Drop In is situated in the central location and historic setting of the 15th Century Cathedral Bell Tower on West Street.  The Drop In is run by a team of trained and DBS checked volunteers from the churches and students from the University of Chichester.

Ruth Poyner, Cathedral Spokeswoman says: 'We are absolutely delighted to be able to offer the Bell Tower for this very worthwhile project - the Drop In Centre has the dual benefit of being a supportive and enjoyable environment for young people and also very reassuring for busy parents who might be working longer hours than ever.  It is a great pleasure to see that young people are already finding it really valuable.'

The Drop In is free of charge and opens its doors after school every day from 2.30pm until 6pm.  It provides a safe and fun place to be for all young people aged 11 - 16 years to come.  It is equipped to equally provide for those needing to get on with some homework on computers and those wanting somewhere safe, dry and warm to be with their friends.

After a big refit and set up the doors opened late in 2014 to run taster and pilot sessions which were a huge success leading to the full opening of the Bell Tower Drop In earlier this year.

The Bell Tower Drop In Trustees are particularly grateful to the organisations listed below for the assistance with this project:

Commercial Supplier Donors: Covers, Carpet 1st Flooring Centre, PMW Communications, Chilliblue.
Donors: St John's Trust, Sussex Community Foundation, FG Woodger Trust.
