Plough Sunday Service to take place in Chichester Cathedral in February

On Sunday 9th February the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI) and Farming Community Network (FCN) will be holding their Plough Sunday Service in the Cathedral at 3.30pm.
The service is a traditional English celebration of the beginning of the agricultural land dating back to the Victorian era. However as Mark Betson, Diocesan Rural Office explains: “Behind it there is a much older observance associated with the first working day after the twelve days of Christmas, hence ‘Plough Monday’ in some places. In days when work was scarce in winter, the observance looked forward to the time of sowing with the promise of a harvest to come.”
The service traditionally took place on the First Sunday of Epiphany but today this service may be held on any appropriate Sunday that coincides with the beginning of the ploughing season. The service at Chichester Cathedral will incorporate members of Sussex Young Farmer’s Clubs who will provide readers and a plough, which will be blessed. This year the Right Reverend Mark Sowerby, Bishop of Horsham is welcomed as the preacher.
