An application has recently been submitted to Chichester District Council by the Rare Brand Market for a German-style Christmas Market to be held next year in the Cathedral Grounds. It is proposed that the Market will contain around 56 traditional huts.

The trading days will be from 30th November to 24th December and the opening hours will be carefully managed to fit in with the Cathedral services and events timetable. Trading hours will mainly follow those on the high street but will be extended to 7pm daily to enable ‘after work’ customers to attend, and will also follow the late-night shopping hours in the City.

Locating the Market on the Cathedral Green avoids obstructing access to high street shops, and there will be no food or drink stands in competition with them – only food sampling and gourmet food gifts will be on sale. The Market will be fully compliant with licensing and Health & Safety legislation.

Chapter is supportive of the application for the Market and has worked closely with the Rare Brand Team to ensure that full consideration has been shown for the daily life of the Cathedral during its duration, and that the Market is appropriate for the special nature of the site, and is respectful in how it operates. The Cathedral sits at the heart of Chichester and we support the wider effort to keep the City as a historic but forward-facing thriving commercial centre.

This Christmas, a mini Market is planned for the Cloisters from Thursday 5 – Saturday 7 December, and Thursday 12 to Saturday 14 December. It will include 10-12 rare/independent local brands, including a stand for the Cathedral shop and one for the Rare Brand Market to communicate plans about the proposed 2020 market.

Details of the Planning Application for 2020 can be found here on the Chichester District Council website.
