So called 'Coburg Conferences' have been held every two years for the past quarter of a century, and this year it was Chichester's turn.  The 2011 Coburg Conference was held in October and organised by the Diocesan Ecumenical European Committee of which the Dean is Chairman.  The Cathedral was pleased to welcome delegates from the evangelical Lutheran Church in Berlin-Brandenburg, the Lutheran Diocese of Bayreuth, headed by Canon of Honour Bishop Dr Dorothea Greiner; the Roman Catholic diocese of Bamberg, led by another Canon of Honour, Professor Dr Wolfgang Klausnitzer, and other representatives from the Chichester Diocese.

The conference included challenging lectures given by Professor Grace Davie and Bishop Kieran Conry, and there was an opportunity for delegates to hear presentations on the mission and ministry of Chichester Cathedral, together with visits to the Library and the Treasury.  There was also a presentation by three Head Teachers about the work of Church Schools locally.

Over three days, there was time for hard work on the theme of Secularism, worship and leisure, with a special visit to Arundel Castle and worship in the Roman Catholic Cathedral.  Lunch was provided by parishioners from St Nicholas Church, Arundel and the Cathedral and served, by couresy of the Mayor, in the Town Hall.

The conference culminated in a special Anniversary Dinner in Vicars' Hall at which the speaker was the German Ambassador, His Excellency Georg Boomgaarden.

The next 'Coburg Conference' will be in Bamberg in 2013.
