Five International Artists Compete for Prestigious Art Commission at Chichester Cathedral

UPDATE 11/11/10:
After long and careful consideration Chapter have made a decision regardng the Hussey Memorial Commission.  This section of the website will be updated  with their announcement on Friday 26 November 2010.

UPDATE 04/08/10:
Chapter gave further careful consideration to this project at its meeting on the 14th July.  At this meeting, a number of outstanding issues were resolved and it is anticipated an announcement will be made after the September meeting of Chapter.

UPDATE 02/07/10:
At the last Chapter meeting (14th June) the Dean and Chapter discussed the recommendation given to them by the Selection Panel.  They have decided to reflect on this for a month before making a decision.

UPDATE 29/03/10:
Following the exhibition of initial proposals from the five shortlisted artists (17/11/09 - 14/12/09) over 400 members of the Cathedral community and general public submitted written comments.  These comments were passed on to the Selection Panel appointed by the Cathedral Chapter, which met on 16 March.  In its deliberations the panel took into account the original presentations by the shortlisted artists, the exhibition, the written comments received, and developments on their initial proposals by some of the artists.  Having deliberated extremely carefully, the Selection Panel decided on its recommendation to Chapter.  This recommendation, and the reasons for it, will be presented to a special meeting of Chapter by the chairman of the Panel, Tim Llewellyn (former Director of the Henry Moore Foundation) at the end of May.

Chapter will then decide whether or not to accept this recommendation.  A final decision is not likely before the June meeting of Chapter at the earliest.  It is said of Dean Walter Hussey that he spent several months contemplating a painting before deciding if it would 'do', and Chapter recognises that a commission of this significance can only benefit from an unhurried approach.  Once a decision has been made, the Cathedral congregation and community will be informed before the information is released more widely.

The exhibition of shortlisted proposals is now closed.  Members of the general public and the Cathedral community have been invited to offer feedback and hundreds have done so.  These responses will be collated for the second meeting of the Selection Panel, which will take place in March 2010.  The Panel will consider the artist's proposals carefully, and taking into account the feedback received, formulate a recommendation to Chapter.  There is a spectrum of possible recommendations, such as:

- approval of one proposal in its current form.
- that none of the proposals fulfil the brief, and Chapter should not proceed
- that one artist should be invited to develop their proposal in dialogue with the Cathedral

The chairman of the Panel, Dr Tim Llewellyn, former Director of the Henry Moore Foundation, will meet with Chapter to communicate the recommendation and the reasons for it.  Chapter will then decide on the way forward.

Chichester Cathedral is delighted to announce plans to commission a major new artwork for the front of the nave.

Five internationally famous artists have been invited to compete for this commission.  Dorothy Cross, Antony Gormley, Ana Maria Pacheco, Jaume Plensa and Mark Wallinger.  The Cathedral will exhibit their proposals in its North Transept from 17 November to 14 December 2009.
