Bishop's Chapel
Bishop's Chapel

Saturday 7th July 2018 - 1.00pm until 4.00pm

As part of the Festival of Chichester the Cathedral will be offering visitors an exciting opportunity to access three historic areas normally closed to the public.

Free entry and all are welcome.

The Cathedral will be opening up its Song School, located at the top of a winding spiral staircase, high up in the Cathedral's triforium.  The Song School is where Chichester's accomplished Cathedral Choir practise twice daily under the direction of the Master of the Choristers.  Keen-eyed visitors might even be able to see the Song School's 'secret chamber'.

The Cathedral Library will also be open, and this too is found at the top of a spiral staircase.  Normally used for research purposes, the Library houses a rare and significant collection of books including an early text by Chaucer, several medieval manuscripts and an intriguing book called the Kenilworth Missal, a fine thirteenth century illuminated volume from Kenilworth Priory, containing early evidence of the liturgical cult of St Richard.

The Bishop's Chapel will also be open to visitors; this peaceful space is the private chapel of the Bishop of Chichester and home to a famous roundel wall-painting dating from the thirteenth century, known as 'The Chichester Roundel'.

This event is free and open to all.  Visitors should be aware that the Song School and Library are accessed by forty steps.  The Bishop's Chapel is on ground level and accessed by just a few shallow steps.
