VE Day 80 at Chichester Cathedral

We will mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a special service of Choral Evensong on Thursday 8th May 2025 at 5:30pm.

This significant occasion is not only a tribute to those who fought for freedom, but also a powerful reminder of the resilience and unity that have defined our country ever since.

Following the service, the Cathedral’s band of bellringers will mark the moment with a joyful peal of bells, which will ring out across the city for approximately 45 minutes.

Securing the future of music at Chichester Cathedral

As the Cathedral celebrates 950 years of history this year, we are looking to the future with a major initiative to preserve one of its most treasured traditions— our music.

Every donation made during this special anniversary year will be doubled thanks to generous match-funding - a gift of £10 becomes £20, and £100 becomes £200. UK taxpayers can add Gift Aid, increasing donations by an extra 25%.

Please help us to raise an additional £950,000 to secure our unique musical heritage for generations to come.

Welcome from the Dean of Chichester

In 1075 the decision to establish the seat of the bishop in Chichester marked the beginning of a remarkable journey for both our diocese and cathedral. For 950 years, Chichester Cathedral has served as the spiritual heart of Sussex, and the mother church of our diocese.

This year, we come together to celebrate this extraordinary legacy through Chichester950, a year-long programme of events that honours the cathedral’s enduring story, and its place in the life of our city, the counties of East and West Sussex, and beyond.

As we reflect on the past, we also look forward with hope and gratitude, seeking to create a lasting legacy of faith, hope and love for future generations. I warmly invite you to join us in this special year of celebration.

The Very Reverend Dr Edward Dowler

Dean of Chichester
