Discover our Transatlantic Heritage

U.S. Independence – Thomas Paine of Lewes, East Sussex, was introduced to Benjamin Franklin by the third Duke of Richmond, known as the ‘Radical Duke’ for his support of the American Revolution. The Duke, Paine, and Franklin are part of the story behind the Sussex Declaration, a unique ceremonial copy of the American Declaration of Independence held safely in West Sussex.

George Washington’s Ancestry – The Washington family has roots in West Sussex. Lawrence Washington, George’s great-great-grandfather, was born in the village of Sulgrave, inspiring elements of the American flag.

World War Two Connections – Lt. John Stanley Parker, the first American to die in action in WWII while serving on HMS Broadwater, is commemorated in the Cathedral’s Sailors’ Chapel. Billy Fiske, the first American pilot killed in WWII, is buried locally with an inscription honouring his sacrifice.

Pilgrims and Sussex – Early supporters of the Pilgrims in Lewes contributed to their journey to the New World in 1620, linking Sussex to this foundational American story.

Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms - Commissioned by Dean Walter Hussey for the 1965 Southern Cathedrals Festival, Chichester Psalms premiered at Carnegie Hall and highlights the Cathedral’s role in transatlantic cultural exchange. A commemorative plaque opposite the Cathedral's West Door entrance celebrates Bernstein’s lasting connection to Chichester and its rich choral tradition. Gifts from America – Generous donations from American benefactors have helped preserve the Cathedral’s architecture, art, and worship, reflecting a long-standing connection and appreciation.
