Chichester Cathedral’s bell tower is the only surviving medieval cathedral detached bell tower in the country, out of at least seven which previously existed.
The Chichester Cathedral Restoration & Development Trust is currently seeking funding to support further investigations into the structural condition of the Bell Tower and to explore potential additional uses for the building alongside its ongoing role in bellringing.
Our vision
Our vision is to secure the future of Chichester Cathedral’s Grade I listed Bell Tower, currently on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register, by developing a robust and inclusive conservation and development plan. This plan will preserve the tower’s architectural and historical significance, address urgent structural needs, and explore future uses of the bell tower through research, consultation, and feasibility work.
We aim to ensure that this iconic landmark continues to serve its original function – bellringing - while also finding a new purpose as a place of learning, heritage exploration and community engagement alongside supporting the development of new and sustainable income streams. In doing so, we hope to create a sustainable and accessible future for the Bell Tower, connecting new generations with its rich history in innovative and meaningful ways.
