Chichester Cathedral Tour: John Flaxman (1755-1826) - Sculptor, Illustrator, Designer

John Flaxman, recognised in his own lifetime as an outstanding sculptor, created eight memorials for Chichester Cathedral. The tour will look at these sculptures, the iconography they use and the lives of the people they celebrate.

Flaxman produced funerary pieces for Lord Nelson, William Pitt, Joshua Reynolds and Robert Burns amongst others. His illustrations, particularly for Homer's Iliad and Odyssey were regarded as masterpieces by his European contemporaries. For much of his working life he was in demand for commemoration pieces in public and religious buildings.

This tour will start with coffee in the Alexandra Room.  The Alexandra Room is accessed through the Cloisters Café.
