Sir Alexander is a much-loved and prolific author whose work has brought joy and reflection to readers across the world.
Best known for The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, his writing is celebrated for its warmth, wit, and gentle wisdom. With more than 100 books to his name including fiction, poetry, short stories, and children’s books - his literary career spans over two decades. This autumn he will be celebrating the publication of the latest book in the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, In the Time of Five Pumpkins and the newest addition to the 44 Scotland Street series, Bertie’s Theory of Ice Cream.
In what promises to be an engaging and thoughtful conversation, the Dean and Sir Alexander will explore his writing, inspirations, and the role of storytelling in a changing world. There will also be an opportunity for questions from the audience.
A selection of Sir Alexander’s books will be available for purchase on the day from St Olav’s Christian Bookshop.

About Sir Alexander McCall Smith
Sir Alexander McCall Smith is the author of over 100 books, including the internationally bestselling No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, which has been translated into more than 40 languages and has introduced millions of readers to the warmth and beauty of Botswana. His other popular series include the Edinburgh-based 44 Scotland Street novels, the Isabel Dalhousie series, and his more recent Perfect Passion Company books.

Born in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and educated in Scotland, he had a distinguished academic career in medical law before turning to full-time writing.
