About Wilfrid the Seal
Wilfrid the Seal was created to celebrate Chichester Cathedral’s 950th anniversary in 2025. He’s inspired by St Wilfrid, the founder of the original Cathedral in nearby Selsey - a place once known as “Seal Island” because of its Old English name, Seolesige, meaning “Seal’s Island” or “Isle of Sea Calves.”
St Wilfrid is often shown with a seal, and Wilfrid the Seal is a playful tribute to that connection - a friendly character who links the Cathedral’s ancient past with the present day. Hand-drawn by local artist Chloe Robertson, Wilfrid invites children and families to explore the Cathedral and discover the story of Christmas in a fun and meaningful way.
