Inaugural Bishop Geoffrey Rowell Memorial Lecture | Our Mother Church: Mary and Ecclesiology

We are delighted to host the first Bishop Geoffrey Rowell Memorial Lecture

The Rt Rev’d Geoffrey Rowell DD was the Bishop of Gibraltar in Europe (2001-13) and a leading scholar-bishop and ecumenist in the Catholic tradition of the Church of England who also developed strong links with the Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox churches. He was for many years a Wiccamical Prebend at Chichester Cathedral (an honorary canon theologian) and retired to the Diocese, prior to his death, aged 74, in 2017.

The annual lecture in his memory at Chichester Cathedral is intended to relate to an aspect of his own interests in ecclesiology, ecumenism, theology and the arts, or church history. It is delivered in association with the International Journal for the Study of the Christian Church, of which he was editor-in-chief.

Our speaker, Fr John Behr is Regius Professor of Humanity at the University of Aberdeen. He previously taught at St Vladimir’s Seminary, where he served as Dean from 2007-17; he is also the Metropolitan Kallistos Chair of Orthodox Theology at the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Center for Orthodox Theology.
