Lunchtime Concert: Oliver Nelson and Julian Jacobson

Chichester Cathedral's popular lunchtime concerts take place on Tuesdays at 1.10pm during term time, in the spectacular setting of the Cathedral Nave. They are free and last approximately 50 minutes. You are welcome to come and go as you please. Coffee is available at no extra charge, and some visitors event bring a sandwich! There is a retiring collection.

Oliver Nelson was born in Glasgow and began learning the violin at the age of six. He gained scholarships to both Canford School and the Royal Academy of Music. His achievements include winning the Academy concerto competition, appearing as soloist with its string orchestra and the building of duo and concerto repertoire with engagements throughout the UK and abroad. His appearances range from recitals at St.Martin-in-the-Fields to concertos with the Royal Oman Symphony Orchestra. He is in demand as a recitalist with Vasilis Rakitzis, Roy Stratford, Nigel Hutchison and Julian Jacobson. Oliver's violin playing appears in Francois Girard's film The Song of Names collaborating with Oscar-winner Howard Shore and Clive Owen. Oliver  teaches at Hindhead Music Centre and the Royal School and lectures for the London based 'Masterclass' series.

Julian Jacobson maintains a busy career as solo and ensemble pianist, teacher, composer, transcriber and conductor. Studying at the Royal College of Music and Queen’s College Oxford, he has gone on to perform in major venues in the UK and more than 40 countries world wide. He has appeared at the major British music festivals and recorded many CDs. He has become widely known for his Beethoven performances, having given ten complete cycles of the 32 sonatas three of which were “marathon” performances where he played the entire cycle from memory in a single day. He is currently recording the cycle for CD, due for completion in 2020, and he is Chairman of the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe.

He teaches at the Royal College of Music and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, is Guest Professor at Xiamen University China, and a Diploma examiner for ABRSM. His own publications include his highly acclaimed transcriptions of Gershwin’s Second Rhapsody and “An American in Paris” for piano duet.
