Musician Biographies

The Speyer Cathedral Choir can look back on a tradition spanning more than 1000 years. Speyer was home to a cathedral singing school as early as the ninth century, from which the cathedral cantorei and later the cathedral choir developed in the Middle Ages.

The choir's primary task is to provide the music for chapter and pontifical masses on Sundays and feast days. In addition, it performs concerts both in Germany and abroad and is an annual participant in the "International Music Days at Speyer Cathedral."

In both worship services and concerts, its most important mission is the proclamation of the Christian faith. Through the intensive study of demanding choral music, the cathedral choir aims to awaken an appreciation for the richness and depth of music and text and to keep the Christian faith alive and proclaim it in our society.

In one to two weekly rehearsals, choral works ranging from early polyphony to contemporary vocal music are rehearsed at a high level. In collaboration with the instrumental ensembles, the cathedral brass ensemble, and the cathedral orchestra, orchestral masses and oratorios are regularly performed. Rehearsal weekends and concert tours round out the choir's social life.
