Improving Visitor Facilities: The North Transept Toilets

Modern, accessible facilities enhancing welcome, comfort and dignity for all who visit.

The Challenge

For many years, the Cathedral’s visitor toilet provision was outdated and inconveniently located.

The former “Treasury Toilets” off the South West Lawn no longer met the expectations of modern visitors, nor the practical needs of staff and volunteers. In addition, the existing modern extension off the North Transept — once an electricity substation — required significant refurbishment, including the replacement of a failing flat roof.

As visitor numbers continued to grow, it became clear that improved, accessible facilities were essential to ensuring a welcoming and inclusive experience for all.

The Solution

In September 2021, after nine months of work, Chichester Cathedral unveiled newly refurbished toilet facilities within the North Transept extension.

The project involved a full internal reconfiguration and upgrade of the building, alongside essential structural repairs.

The scheme delivered:

  • Nine individual unisex cubicles
  • One accessible cubicle
  • Private hand basins and hand-dryers within each cubicle
  • A dedicated flower room with sink and drainer for the Cathedral’s Flower Arranging Team

The design prioritised accessibility, privacy and efficiency, creating facilities appropriate for a major historic site welcoming thousands of visitors each year.

The Impact

Though often unseen, high-quality visitor facilities are fundamental to hospitality and inclusion.

This project has:

  • Significantly improved comfort and convenience for visitors and worshippers
  • Enhanced accessibility
  • Provided appropriate working space for the Cathedral’s Flower Arranging Team
  • Replaced outdated infrastructure with modern, efficient provision

The result is a practical but vital improvement to the Cathedral’s daily life and visitor experience.

Funding & Partnership

Fundraising for this project was coordinated by the Chichester Cathedral Restoration & Development Trust, which also contributed directly towards the costs.

The scheme was made possible through support from:

  • The Government’s Culture Recovery Fund for Major Works Programme
  • The dedicated generosity of the Chichester Cathedral Friends
  • Individual donors and supporters

Looking Ahead

Ensuring that the Cathedral remains welcoming and accessible is an ongoing priority.

Alongside major conservation projects, continued investment in facilities helps ensure that all who enter — whether for worship, tourism or community events — experience the Cathedral at its best.
