Chichester Cathedral welcomed more than 14,500 visitors over eight days to its 950th Anniversary Light Experience, a major fundraising event that raised over £155,000 in ticket sales.
The immersive light and sound installation, created by the internationally renowned artistic collaboration Luxmuralis, transformed the Cathedral’s architecture with thousands of archival images. The display wove together centuries of history, celebrating the Cathedral’s heritage and its continued role in the life of the community.
Doves, the moon, Mars… There have been a number of light installations hosted by Chichester Cathedral in recent years. But the Light Experience which forms the finale of a whole host of celebrations to mark the iconic building’s 950th anniversary has to be the most spectacular yet.
Running from 24–31 October 2025, the event offered a unique and memorable experience for visitors of all ages. Many described the installation as “magical,” “deeply moving,” and “unlike anything they’d seen before.” One visitor remarked, “We are so lucky to have this lovely Cathedral in our city.”
Event organisers Oliver Tubb and Rebecca Lewry-Gray said:
“We would like to thank everyone who attended, supported, and shared the experience. The success of the Light Experience would not have been possible without the enthusiasm and generosity of our many visitors. We are especially grateful to the dedicated team of Cathedral staff and volunteers, whose tireless work behind the scenes made this event possible. From welcoming guests to managing logistics, their commitment and care helped create a truly memorable experience for all.”
As the Cathedral reflects on a remarkable year of events, the Light Experience stands out as a fitting finale to Chichester950 - a year-long programme marking 950 years of religious, cultural, and civic life across the region.
