Romans in the Cathedral and across the city
Did you know the Cathedral is home to its very own piece of Roman history? Beneath your feet lies the remains of a 2nd-century Roman mosaic, discovered in 1966 and believed to have once formed the floor of a large public building. Imagine life in Roman times as you walk (or jump!) over this incredible slice of history.
As you explore the ancient spaces and rich history of the Cathedral discover even more secrets hidden beneath your feet at the Arundel Screen, the grand archway at the heart of the Cathedral. Spot shapes at the High Altar in the brightly coloured woven tapestry. Our friendly Guides are also on hand to share fascinating stories and fun facts… why not ask them a question?

To dive even deeper into Chichester’s ancient past, visit the Novium Museum’s award-winning Roman Week - 26th - 31st May. With hands-on activities, expert talks and a live Roman re-enactment in Priory Park on Thursday 29th May, it’s the perfect complement to your Cathedral visit.
