Welcoming new Chorister recruits

We were delighted to welcome our new cohort of Chorister recruits, or probationers, this autumn. For the first time in the Cathedral’s centuries’-long history, this includes girls.

Charles Harrison, Organist & Master of the Choristers said: "It has been a remarkably smooth transition. Our four choirgirls are delighted to be with us. On Sunday 13th November, the first girl chorister, H, will be formally admitted to the choir. She will make her contribution to the busy round of Christmas services and concerts, offering her musical gifts to the choir and all those who enjoy its music. Her presence is also a clear sign that Chichester now offers the gift of its unique chorister experience to girls as well as boys, and we hope that many more children will be drawn to explore this great opportunity."

The musical and academic education offered by the Cathedral and The Prebendal School is a springboard for future success. Many Choristers go on to win scholarships at prestigious secondary schools, where their choral training, discipline and team skills are highly valued.

Beauty in Sound | Behind the Scenes of the Cathedral organ

Tim Ravalde, Assistant Organist, has recently recorded an organ recital for the YouTube channel Beauty in Sound (BiS). BiS has a remarkable reach - over 85,000 subscribers, and our hope is that this collaboration will allow our organ to be heard all over the world.

Richard McVeigh, who runs BiS, describes the instrument as a “wonderful organ which absolutely deserves to be better known”.

Tim has also recorded a short guided tour of the organ, demonstrating something of its range and variety.
