On Wednesday, visitors to Chichester’s city centre were pleasantly surprised with a random act of kindness: a gift of beautifully crafted floral arrangements, celebrating the arrival of Spring.

The arrangements were created by Floral Designers Hannah Howell and Chantal Howell, from local business Tawny Flower Studio. Hannah is the 2024 Designer for Chichester’s Festival of Flowers, a four day spectacular in the setting of the 949 year old Cathedral, taking place from 5th – 8th June.

Hannah and Chantal, wearing bright pink aprons, stand in front of the historic grey stone Cathedral, surrounded by green grass. They are holding colourful bunches of flowers.

Hannah said: “Flowers naturally follow the seasons, so it felt right to welcome Spring with acts of kindness, brightening someone’s day with a beautiful arrangement. In our busy lives, pausing to appreciate nature's beauty and share joy is priceless. As we await the bloom of gardens, let's also be kind to one another - every small act has the potential to spread happiness!”

Passers-by in the city centre were surprised to receive the seasonal bouquets from Hannah and Chantal, with one commenting: “Thank you, these are beautiful – what a kind thing to do!”.

The Cathedral’s biennial Festival of Flowers offers visitors the opportunity to experience 60 floral arrangements, handcrafted by talented local florists, flower enthusiasts and community groups from across the county. Whether you are a keen gardener or simply appreciate the beauty of flowers, you will find something to inspire and delight you.
